As part of a major refurbishment programme at Waterford Regional Hospital devised by Terry O'Connor, the Hospital's Assistant Technical Services Manager/Clerk of Works, with the assistance of Derek Nolan of Profloor Systems, Altro safety flooring and hygienic wall cladding was specified in a variety of locations. Altro Maxis 25 slip-resistant vinyl flooring was installed in shower en-suites on the wards, together with Altro Whiterock Pastel wall cladding to create a hygienic, safe and easily maintained package. Previously, painted walls were hard to clean and tiles were unhygienic. The same combination was installed in the Hospital's mortuary. Altro Whiterock was also used on the corridor walls leading to the theatres, as they had been damaged by trolleys and an impact-resistant, easily cleaned surface was needed. The challenge facing the contractors Profloor was to carry out the work while the wards were still occupied but a major feature of the Altro installation was the fact that it was dustfree and odour-free, thereby causing no discomfort or problems for the patients. A 12-year warranty, the incorporation of a bacteriostat for enhanced hygiene and Easyclean Maxis Technology for superior cleanability and colour retention were among the factors in favour of Altro Maxis flooring while patients' safety underfoot, particularly in wet areas, was of critical
"It was a considerable challenge to complete the installation without disrupting the day-to-day routine of the Hospital but we were pleased with the finished product. The Hospital now has floor and wall surfaces that are robust, easy to clean and, perhaps most importantly, durable and long lasting." Derek Nolan, Director, Profloor Systems, Waterford "The cleaning of these areas has never been easier and it is comforting to know that both patients and staff are in a clean, safe environment. We are very pleased with the Altro package solution and plan on using the products for the foreseeable future."
