Research has revealed that the environment surrounding a hospital patient can be a significant factor in the healing process and contribute to the speed of recovery. An holistic approach can have a positive psychological effect and play an important role in improving the patient's well-being. The careful selection of colours, materials and lighting has also been proven to have beneficial effects on the morale of the many healthcare professionals entrusted with the care of patients. It is an approach that has been embraced by Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, one of Ireland's biggest and busiest general hospitals, as part of its on-going refurbishment programme. One element in the overall design scheme is the use of highly colourful Altro Whiterock pvc wall cladding from the 'Chameleon Collection'. Developed to increase design options with a fresh choice of solid colours, all with a high gloss finish, Chameleon offers a range of natural colours to bright, vibrant tones.
Used in innovative stripes and custom patterns at various locations on different floor levels, the walling breaks the monotony of the corridors, protects the walls from being damaged by trolleys and so reduces the risk of contamination such as MRSA. The impact-resistant and hygienic characteristics of Altro 'Chameleon', along with the vibrant colours such as 'Juicy Lucy', 'Eau de Chic' and 'Feng Shui', were considered highly critical in the decisionmaking process. A 10-year product warranty and the Altrosan integral biocide were important features from the hospital's perspective too.The Chameleon walling was installed in various custom designs and patterns over several months, the end result being a dramatic transformation of the whole ambience within Beaumont Hospital.
